The technology world is a fun and ever changing world. Today, there are literally thousands of products in the
marketplace. We are simply swarmed by the sheer number of products that we can choose from. And these are not big ticket items. They could be just small little gadgets like a mobile phone, a portable printer, or a digital camera.Of course, if you have the budget, a seemingly small item may end up costing you a small fortune. When making a buying decision, you need to be discerning enough to strike a balance between the price and your own needs and wants. One way to achieve this balance, is to rely on technology news to help you come to a better decision.
How technology news can help you.
Make a quick visit to any technology news website. There are a plethora of tech sites out there on the Internet. Some are well established websites (think CNET), and others are run by small publishers. Both have their merits.A big publisher usually releases tons of tech related news on all sorts of products. The problem is, due to the huge scope of coverage, the focus is usually diluted. You will find different types of content – reviews, product releases, specifications, etc. Some of these content are written by paid tech writers, so there is a commercial element involved. Perhaps some writers are more inclined to write positive things about the products? Maybe.
Smaller publishers tend to be more focused, and they usually release news on hand picked products only. Being small, they can’t possibly cover everything under the sun. So it’s a wise strategy to adopt. Often, you find articles that are much more in depth. The owners are also more likely to be very passionate about the tech products they are writing about. When buying a tech gadget, you usually pay more for newer technology. The important here is to remember that everything new comes with a much heftier price tag. The technology may not be necessarily better (e.g. buggy since it’s new), but you still end up paying substantially more for the product anyway.
If you want to save some money, just be patient. Keep browsing the tech news to keep yourself abreast of the changes. For instance, how is the technology improving? What are others saying about the brand new gadget? If you read nothing but great reviews on the product, that is a good sign. You may need to suppress your own desire a little, so that you don’t end up rushing to be the first in line to buy that new camcorder, new television, or new mobile phone. Just wait a little. The price will come down soon enough as soon as the masses start to adopt the new technology. That way, you get a more stable device, at a much lower price.
What will 2010 bring for the Cable-Telecom Industries?
Broadband and Wireless will continue an evolution of defining the way we communicate and make decisions that affect our daily lives in significant ways. Relevant companies will struggle to deal with an ever increasing shift of consumer preferences in their business and home information, communication, and entertainment needs.
Here are my Top 10 Predictions for 2010:
1). The FCC will move to increase regulation of ISP’s as a way to open broadband options for both business and consumers
2). The Universal Service Fund will be re-directed to increase broadband access to the underserved
3). The FCC will gain spectrum back from the broadcasting industry to advance Wireless industry initiatives and will continue to grow exponentially in 2010
4). Consumers will look for economical and alternative ways to connect to the things that are important to them through a broadband global universe, including information, entertainment, education, and health
5). Cable TV companies will struggle with a dwindling demand for linear programming and the consumers demand for viewing content on their own terms. TV Everywhere will be a success in the short term
6). Cable-Telecom companies will continue to struggle with customer satisfaction issues and will begin to focus more on this issue as subscribers continue to migrate elsewhere. Companies like Cox Communications will continue to thrive due to a focus on quality engineering and customer service
7). Demand for access to content on an A-La-Carte basis will gain ground with Over-The -Top Access Providers making significant head-way during the year
8). Cable-Telecom companies with underperforming networks will be subject to buy-outs and take-over’s as the industry continues to consolidate and upgrade infrastructures
9). Verizon (FIOS) will continue to gain market share where rolled-out due to its advanced capabilities for consumers and businesses
10). The Cable-Telecoms will continue to make their bundles more competitively attractive as they compete for the one-stop-shopping experience
2010 will be all about the customer experience and a continued change in broadband dynamics. The Cable Industry will struggle with a diminishing demand for linear programming, and the success of alternative Over-The-Top models of content access.
When history looks back on the last few decades and the infancy of the Internet can be properly defined, it will likely be chronicled that the Internet is the greatest learning tool since the printing press. Even small African villages where basic electricity can sometimes be a rarity, computers and the Internet are changing the way people view the world. Along with millions of pages dedicated to news, politics, and other things, technology is always a dominant subject on a medium powered by the latest technological inventions. Here are just a few sites you can visit for the latest in tech news.
The site cNet has been a leader in all things technology for years. Not only do they have a mountain of news stories dedicated to technology, but they also have a seemingly never-ending amount of product reviews. They also run the popular Download.com site that allows you to download samples of software or freeware and shareware programs from around the world. Ask any hardcore computer geek about this site and they will likely tell you that they have it bookmarked and that they check-in with cNet at least once per day.
Following closely behind cNet is ZDnet. They have been around almost as long and have crafted a fine reputation for not only breaking news on all things technology but also having some of the best opinion writers on staff, as well. Many of the stories have comments enabled, which means you can fire back at a columnist who is voicing an opinion that you think is absurd. Remember, just because someone has something printed on the Internet, it doesn’t mean that person has any idea what they are talking about. Just remember to stay civil and respectful when making your point.
Some of the best mainstream news outlets available also have excellent technology news departments, as well. Sites like the San Francisco Chronicle, situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, CNN, MSNBC and the BBC all have web pages with technology sections that are updated several times per day. It is always fun to read the same major breaking news story from more than one perspective, and the Internet allows you to do that without even batting an eyelash. Oftentimes, big tech news stories break through and end up on the main page for these sites so you won’t even have to go looking for them.
